The same behavior is experienced in file directories containing MS Word documents. Upon starting Windows, a number of icons on user's desktop, especially the Microsoft Word and Excel icons change in appearance to a white square with a thin band of blue along the top. When they go to shortcut properties to change the icon, the change icon button is greyed out. TLDR: Extend volume option is greyed out for my main boot volume (Windows 7) even though I have 157GB of unallocated space. Some users using Windows Vista or Windows 7 experience a strange behavior such as that their icons, especially MS Word and MS Excel icons, malfunction and do not display correctly. Screenshot of the drive and my issue in Disk Management. I've backed up most of my important files from the W7 and W10 partitions in case anything I do does cause an issue. I also thought about trying to extend the volume with third-party software like ease-us or one of the other partition tools, but I'm a little wary. Is there any reason I should be worried about converting the disk to dynamic to expand the volume and then changing back so I can dual boot? I was about to convert the disk to a dynamic disk as this was recommended online as a way to make it possible to extend the volume, but I decided against it when I saw this message saying I would no longer be able to dual boot. I have tried extending the Windows 7 volume in Windows 7 and in Windows 10 and the "extend volume" option was greyed out either way.

Partition style is "GUID Partition Table (GPT)".Īs I was no longer using Windows 10 as much I shrunk that volume and thought I would be able to extend the Windows 7 volume with the 157 GB of unallocated space. The HDD is a 750GB HGST drive (HGST HTS541075A9E680 ATA). I am trying to expand my main boot volume (Windows 7) with the unallocated space on this HDD however the "extend volume" option is greyed out. I'm using an HP Pavilion 15 laptop (Model no: po11-tx) dual booting Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 and Windows 10.
